About Our Programs

Our goal across our focus areas is to meet folks where they're at. Not only do we travel to our partner organizations' facilities, but we collaborate with program partners and participant artists every step of the way to ensure that our adaptive programming fosters joy, confidence, and well-being.

Our service area includes the Greater Richmond Region, Petersburg, and parts of Southside Virginia and our programming is delivered in two ways-

  • Our in-person programs start with an Art on Wheels teaching artist who travels with everything needed for each class session. Our highly trained teaching artists guide participant artists and partner staff through each project, focusing on getting to know each participant’s interests and aligning them with focused programming goals.

  • Our kit- based delivery method provides program partners with individual or group kits. Kits are delivered to their facility for distribution to program participants. Using our kit model gives program partners and participants several options to engage with Art on Wheels’ programs, including but not limited to conference calls to discuss projects, video tutorials, or online instruction.

Explore our program focus areas below and give us a call to learn how Art on Wheels programming can fit the specific needs of your organization.

Our visual art, music therapy and performance art programs support four main focus areas.

Aging IN the Arts

Aging in the Arts facilitates increased mental and physical activity in participant artists and improves overall wellness by fostering new friendships and increasing confidence.

Arts And Disability

The Arts and Disability curriculum focuses on methodology, which maximizes cognitive engagement and critical thinking abilities. This approach increases participant artists' feelings of success, self esteem, enjoyment and socialization by focusing on process rather than an end product.

Healing in the Arts

The arts give people an opportunity to express difficult emotions while going through a challenging time in their lives. There is substantial research to support the benefits of arts participation for people with chronic illness, and our goal is to help people on their healing journey.

ART IN THE COMMUNITY

Our Arts in the Community programming seeks to increase public participation in the arts; encouraging creative ownership while providing community members with new opportunities to have meaningful arts experiences.

“It helps my morale, makes me feel good to do something different. Being my age and being able to do these things has given me confidence that I can do other things in my life as well. It helps me feel independent.”

- Ada, an Aging in the Arts participant artist
